First Look or No First Look?

How to Decide

It's one of the first big decisions brides start thinking about: do we see each other before the ceremony, or wait for the aisle? As a Central Florida wedding photographer, it's a question I hear from almost every couple at Created by Patty. There's no wrong answer, only the one that fits you, so here's what to know before you decide.

What is a first look at a wedding?

A first look is a private moment for the two of you to see each other for the first time on your wedding day, before the ceremony. It usually happens somewhere quiet and beautiful, away from guests, with just your photographer nearby to capture your reactions.

The benefits of a first look

  • It calms your nerves. Seeing each other first lets you breathe, hold hands and enjoy a moment together before the day speeds up.

  • You get more relaxed wedding portraits. With portraits done before the ceremony, nothing feels rushed.

  • You get to enjoy your cocktail hour. Instead of spending it taking photos, you can mingle with your guests.

  • It's a chance for private vows. Many couples exchange letters or say a few words to each other in that quiet moment.

Why some couples skip the first look

For some couples, seeing each other for the first time at the end of the aisle is the moment they've always pictured, and that's beautiful too. If you choose to wait, we'll plan a little extra time after the ceremony for portraits so your wedding day timeline still feels relaxed.

Can't decide? Try a first touch

If you want a quiet moment together but still want to save the big reveal, a first touch is a sweet in-between. You stand on either side of a door or a corner, hold hands, and talk or pray together without seeing each other.

Planning your first look together

Whether you choose a first look, a first touch or the classic moment at the end of the aisle, I'll build your wedding day timeline around it so your day flows. I'm Patty, the photographer behind Created by Patty, and I photograph weddings across Florida and North Carolina. Want to talk it through? I'd love to hear what you're picturing for your day.
